The back-lock folder, crafted by Koji Hara, showcases a mirror-polished Cowry-Y steel blade with a double-edged dagger profile. Its handle is composed of integral stainless steel, hand-dimpled, polished, and adorned with exquisitely shaped and polished mother of pearl.
Inspired by "GOMA-BASHI," the Tai Kok chopsticks made from cedar sapwood and used traditionally to burn small wood pieces on an altar for blessings of health and fertility, the blade's design also features intricate carvings reminiscent of those found on Japanese swords.
The mother of pearl handle is beautifully illustrated on both sides with the story of Urashima Tarō, depicted using the traditional Japanese Maki-e technique. Urashima Tarō, a fisherman and protagonist of a Japanese folktale, earns a visit to the Dragon Palace beneath the sea for rescuing a turtle. The knife is presented in a Kiri wood box, designed to display the knife prominently.
Regarding the Engraver:
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese art form that involves sprinkling gold or silver powder over lacquer for decoration, employing tools such as a makizutsu or a kebo brush. Originating in the Heian Period and flourishing during the Edo Period, maki-e was initially a craft for court nobles and later became a status symbol for royalty and military leaders.
Maki-e craftsmen use various metal powders, including gold, silver, and platinum, to create diverse colors and textures. They apply these powders using bamboo tubes and soft brushes to draw delicate lines. Mastery of maki-e painting requires years of dedication, with the most accomplished artists being recognized as masters of the craft.
